Three dietitians interviewed by health publication Verywell have named plain water as the single best beverage for supporting kidney health.
Specialized electrolyte drinks and wellness supplements are not required to maintain renal health, according to the experts. The kidneys filter large volumes of blood to extract waste products and surplus fluid, a vital process that relies on consistent hydration.
Dehydration decreases blood flow to the organs and can cause acute kidney injury in severe cases. Research indicates that repeated kidney injuries increase the risk of developing chronic kidney disease over time.
Adequate water intake also helps clear waste through urine and decreases the likelihood of developing kidney stones, which form when waste minerals solidify in the kidneys.
Daily water intake and kidney risks
Dietitian Yasi Ansari said that inadequate water consumption can be linked to an increased risk of albuminuria. Albuminuria is a condition in which the protein albumin leaks into urine, serving as an early indicator of kidney damage.
Medical studies showed that drinking less than 500 ml of water per day, or about two cups, raises the overall risk of albuminuria.
The dietitians emphasized that fluid intake should be guided by individual needs. While research studies frequently suggest a general benchmark of 8 to 10 cups of water per day, exact requirements depend on physical activity, weather temperatures, diet, and health status.
The body also absorbs fluid from other beverages and foods. Unsweetened tea, coffee, and fruit juices without added sugar contribute to daily fluid levels. However, plain water remains the simplest option because it contains no sugar, calories, or additional ingredients.
Harmful beverages and stone prevention
The dietitians advised against consuming excessive amounts of sugary and high-calorie drinks. Regular consumption of sugary beverages leads to weight gain and chronic health conditions that put additional strain on kidney function.
Additionally, certain carbonated sodas contain fructose and phosphoric acid, two substances that can trigger kidney stone formation.
For individuals prone to developing kidney stones, citrus juices can provide protective health benefits. Lemon, lime, and orange juices contain citrate, a natural compound that binds to calcium and can prevent certain calcium stones from forming.
In other health coverage, dietitians previously identified a top recommended drink to consume before bed for gut health. Experts also recently outlined the health effects of eating cheese daily, including safe consumption limits and recommended cheese varieties.
