Green tea is one of the most beneficial drinks people can consume regularly, dietitians say, because it helps the body fight chronic inflammation linked to cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders, according to Eatingwell.
Dietitians said catechins, antioxidants especially abundant in green tea, play the main role. Scientists link these compounds to potential protection against insulin resistance, elevated cholesterol and certain age-related brain diseases. Dietitians said catechins help neutralize free radicals that damage cells and trigger inflammation, while also boosting the body's own antioxidant defenses.
What the research found
Experts pointed to a review of 38 randomized clinical trials showing that regular green tea consumption raises levels of antioxidant enzymes, which help the body resist oxidative stress, a major driver of chronic inflammation. Some studies also found that daily green tea consumption lowers blood markers of inflammation and supports long-term health benefits.
Other ways to reduce inflammation
Experts recommend a balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruit, berries, leafy greens and omega-3 foods such as fatty fish, walnuts and flaxseed. They advised cutting added sugar, sugary drinks, desserts and alcohol, which fuel inflammation, getting seven to nine hours of sleep nightly, and staying active through walking, swimming, dancing, strength training or yoga to lower inflammation markers, improve insulin sensitivity and reduce visceral fat.
