Interviews with Oscar voters in many industries have shown that the only title consistently at the top of their list is Netflix. No news from the western front this is the German entry for International Feature Film. That it has power across the board, however, is confirmed by the Oscar shortlists in 10 categories released Wednesday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
All quiet was named on five of them – it could have qualified in any category (makeup and hairstyling, sound, visual effects, musical score, international film) and was affiliated with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to lead the lists.
The German film, directed by Edward Berger, is the first major adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s WWI classic since Lewis Milestone’s Oscar-winning Best Picture in 1930. Based on the excitement I’ve felt since Netflix first released the screened early fall, it looks like a solid choice for Love of Academy in several categories, including best picture, director and adapted screenplay once the nominations for the 95th Academy Awards are announced in January. 24

Ryan Coogler’s sequel to his multi-Oscar nominated 2018 Marvel sensation Black Panther also had an impressive performance today and looks impressive, at least in the craft categories, where it also scores in all sorts of competitions it qualifies for (makeup and hairstyling, sound, visual effects, musical score, and Rhianna’s song “Lift Me high ” ).
Closely followed in the number of mentions is that of James Cameron avatar: the way of water, which seems poised to repeat the multiple nominations in 2009 avatar got. It is on four lists daily for Music Score, Song – “Nothing is Lost (You Give Me Power)” – Sound and Visual Effects.
Babylon, the Batman, all at oncePinocchio by Guillermo del Toro and Top Gun: Maverick are included in three lists. (See all 10 shortlists below.)
BOUND TOGETHER: All That Breathes Breathes Easier After Making the Oscar Doc Shortlist But Some Big Titles Fail
These shortlists are eagerly awaited to see which way the winds might blow in Oscar territory, and there generally aren’t many surprises today. (My colleagues Matt Carey and Nancy Tartaglione will analyze and break down the documentary and international film categories later today.) I was surprised and disappointed by the omission of Amazon and Amblin’s Wonderful Good night, it was AWOL among the 15 semi-finalists for documentaries. Mainstays Italy and Spain missed out on the international film category of their 15 finalists, but the list is mostly made up of the most prominent contenders since the Cannes Film Festival kicked off in May.
The original songs category, featuring the likes of Rhianna, Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift and other famous pop stars, looks headed for the final five, which will be a clash of current music giants, but never. never Count Diane Warren, recipient of an honorary Oscar last month and now on track for a possible 14th nomination in the Applause category, from the little-seen documentary Tell it like a woman.
