‘I’m not here to say it didn’t do anything for me’: Wes Nelson looks to shade Molly-Mae Hague by refuting her comments that she would have thrived without Love Island

Wes Nelson appeared to shade Molly-Mae Hague by saying he needed Love Island to be famous.

The former Love Island star, 24, appeared on new Channel 4 documentary Life After Love Island: UNTOLD.

When asked if he would have reached his level of success without the show, Wes said, “You bet I would have made sure I was kind of in the position. 100 percent.

But he admitted: “Did it help me, did it give me a lift?” Natural. I’m not here to say it didn’t do me anything, that’s all my work. No, that’s the case.

“It gave me a platform. But how you use that platform is very important, because there are now hundreds and hundreds of Islanders who have had that platform.”

He seemed to hit back at Molly-Mae’s attempts to distance her from the show that made her name.

Speaking on The Diary CEO podcast in January, Molly-Mae said she believed her “work ethic” would have allowed her to have the same level of success without the series.

She insisted, “One side of me thought I could actually do it without going on that show.

“I think I had about 170,000 followers at the time and it was all organic growth. There were no TV shows or anything like that.

“I would say now if I hadn’t gone on the show, I’d say I’d still have a million followers because I had a really good work ethic with my Instagram.”

Molly-Mae argued that Love Island “just lifted me up” and said she doesn’t appreciate it taking her to where she is today.

She claimed: “When you come out of this show you’re all on equal footing and it’s totally up to you what you take on top of it and I just knew I wanted to go to a level that no one had gone before.” .

“And that’s why I never really talk about it, because I feel like I don’t owe anything … that’s why I’m not where I am today.”

“Yes it gave me a platform, yes it took me to the next level, but the things I’ve done now are not because of Love Island. They are because of me and my work ethic.”

She also told MailOnline: “The things I’ve achieved since I left this show aren’t really down to the show, but more to my drive and ambition to do great things.”

Elsewhere in the documentary, Wes said he felt like an influencer’s lifestyle was “very wrong” and not for him.

The reality star said he initially tried to go that route, but backtracked and returned the money.

He admitted, “I got pretty depressed about it, really depressed, really anxious all the time.

“The whole thing is very, very false. I don’t want to be part of that, I want to be part of something real, make a difference, make people happy and show my talents.”

He added that there is a “stigma” around people from reality star backgrounds that they have to fight.

Wes said: “There’s a stigma around reality TV and going into music or acting or something like that. Most people say you have no talent.”
