Gwendolyn Yates Whittle receives the 2023 Career Achievement Award from Motion Picture Sound Editors

The Motion Picture Sound Editors said today that Gwendolyn Yates Whittle received the 2023 MPSE Career Achievement Award at the group’s 70th annual Golden Reel Awards in February.

Supervising sound editor Whittle is a two-time Academy Award nominee avatar and Tron Legacy and won six Golden Reels in 20 career nominations from 1998 to 2022. She also has an Emmy nomination for WandaVision last year

“An extraordinarily gifted sound artist, Gwen has made her talents available to an incredible variety of films and television shows,” said MPSE President Mark Lanza. “She has been a true pioneer in the industry since her early days and has served as a mentor, role model and inspiration to countless aspiring recording engineers. The MPSE is proud to present her with our annual Career Achievement Award.”

Whittle has lived in Northern California’s Skywalker Sound for more than 30 years and has appeared in more than 120 films, ranging from small independents to blockbusters Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Iron Man, Cloverfield and jurassic world. Started as a PA in the art department on the Sundance film Nice conversationShe later made the leap to sound through The unbearable lightness of being, which specializes in production sound and ADR editing. She spent much of 2022 on final mixing Avatar 2: The Way of Water in Wellington, New Zealand.

She also appeared in the documentary Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound.

“This award reminds me how lucky and grateful I am to have had the opportunities I’ve had,” Whittle said. “I have tremendous support from my family and colleagues which allows me to thrive in a very competitive industry, still be at the heart of it and work with the most creative people from around the world. Many thanks to all the people who have guided, supported and encouraged me over the past 30 years. I wonder where it will take me next.”

The MPSE Career Achievement Award recognizes sound artists who have distinguished themselves through meritorious work as individuals and contributors to the art of sound for feature film, television and games and set an example of excellence to others.
