Jordan Peele no marked the filmmaker’s third collaboration with composer Michael Abels, who brought his music from the sci-fi horror film to life at Deadline’s Sound & Screen awards season event.
After a performance of the score with a 60-piece orchestra, Abels talked about his process of creating film scores and working with Peele to define what an evil miracle, the film’s theme, sounds like.
“We talked about what it would be,” Abels said of creating that sound. “Ultimately, it was important that there was equal parts awe and wonder, like what you feel when you look at something that is spiritual in its beauty and also something that is just absolutely terrifying. And those two things had to be alive at the same time, otherwise people would understand one of the themes of the film, and that’s why we’re all drawn to the spectacle, even when it shouldn’t be – we can’t help it. A nasty miracle is an example of something we shouldn’t be in, but we all just can’t look the other way.”
“After we talked a lot about it, I made some demonstrations of different things,” added Abels. “Often I don’t even tell Jordan what scene the music is for, because as a writer and director I think Jordan knows where it’s going when it comes to the movie. And he really likes to shift it, even when we’ve said music is appropriate for a particular scene. It’s really fascinating to see what it reveals about the character or the story. He’s really serious about getting all his department heads to work together, so I feel the bar is set high. It is a pleasure to try to inspire him and the other people who work at the Post.”
While working on a film that is part spaghetti western and part alien, Abels says he tackles all the elements at once.
“There are about four different ones [themes] in addition to the two mentioned, it is also a brother and sister love story, a family love story. There is a real heart in it. Then in the end it is also an action adventure in a surprising way. It’s important to really start at all these points and figure out where they all contribute to a cohesive score. It’s one note at a time after all. But I will tackle them all at the same time.”
