After we ventured into the Amazon lost city z, and then spaces with Ad Astra, Writer/director James Gray has returned to the New York roots that shaped so many of his previous films and has now turned it into his most personal film yet. Armageddon period, His latest film reflects much of his formative years growing up, even to the point where he filmed just a short distance from his childhood home. Gray joins me this week for the launch of the new Oscar season installment of my Deadline video series. Behind the lens. An independent filmmaker in the true sense of the word, Gray has made a name for himself by making several competitive trips to the Cannes Film Festival with films set in New York, such as: Little Odessa, The Yards, Ours is the Night, Two Lovers and The immigrant. Now with Armageddon period, starring Jeremy Strong, Anne Hathaway and Anthony Hopkins, which he also screened at Cannes last May, earned renewed recognition by delving deep into a world he knows well in this film, set in 1980. In our conversation, we explore why the time was right to make this barely disguised film about his own life and times, the difficulties of making and distributing indie films, the likes of Fred and Donald Trump in his life as well as being a part of that one film and fueling his ambition to make films and much more. Join me every Friday during Oscar season for another installment of Behind the lens.
