Lonely and dangerous: why a harmless cartoon about a hippopotamus was banned in the USSR

The main character just wanted to make friends.

The creator of the legendary cartoon “Once upon a time there was a dog” Eduard Nazarov started his career as a director not so well. The artistic council did not leave a wet spot from his “Hippo”.

An innocent cartoon in which a lone hero searches for someone similar to him to play with and make friends with raises serious questions.

At first, the cartoon offender was suspected of lack of collectivism. Then I did not like the voice of the legendary Igor Kvasha. And finally, in a simple sentence for the little ones, they found a hint of the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM):

“There will be a roar and a clatter and a rumble and a hum and a boom and a rumble”, the excessive “Bam” had to be replaced with a neutral “Boom”.

If the director was not so resistant to criticism, Soviet viewers would never have seen the famous masterpieces: “About Sidorov Vova”, “Once upon a time there was a dog”, “The princess and the cannibal”.
