Updated according to the Television AcademyNominations for the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, airing September 12 on NBC, were announced today. By that time, the host of the main Emmy Awards ceremony has already been announced. In 2012, that year’s Emmy host Jimmy Kimmel was chosen to host Emmy nominations in his pajamas when original co-host Nick Offerman was unable to travel to Los Angeles due to bad weather.

The trial was postponed this year. As reported exclusively by Deadline, the Television Academy and production team of Reginald Hudlin and Done + Dusted began the guest search last month in high profile, sending inquiries to the likes of Chris Rock and Dwayne Johnson, but they both refused. After being relatively quiet on the hosting front today, Television Academy President and CEO Frank Sherma told Deadline that Emmy options with and without hosts are on the table.

“We’re trying to figure that out,” he told Deadline’s Pete Hammond in a question and answer session about the Emmy host’s plight. “Now Reggie and the Done + Dusted team are putting together some creative ideas for us and showing them to everyone so we can begin to understand how we want to do it with or without a host and who will host it.”
Update: After the Deadline story came out, the Television Academy released a statement clarifying Fencing’s comments. “Television Academy President Frank Sher had no intention of suggesting that an unattended ceremony be considered,” the statement read.
Primetime Emmys have gone without a presenter four times in their 73-year history, most recently in 2019 when the show aired on Fox. NBC once filmed an untitled Emmy in 1998.
