Cinco Paul came up with the idea of creating a series that was both a parody and a tribute to the golden age musicals of the 1940s and 1950s. The pilot episode, “Puddin,” is the latest episode of It Starts on the Page, Deadline’s annual series that highlights the scripts that serve as the creative backbone of the noisy show that sets television awards season. The scripts for our series were nominated for an Emmy Award this year and were selected before the deadline, using criteria including critical acclaim, a wide range of networks and platforms, and a mix of established and lesser-known shows. .
The series tells the story of Melissa and Josh, played by Cecil Strong and even Keegan-Michael, two doctors who arrive with a backpack to save their relationship. When they get lost, they find themselves in the magical city of Shmigadun, where they find themselves framed in a musical until they find true love.
“Puddin,” by Paul and Daurio and directed by Barry Sonnenfield, begins with a meeting between Melissa and Josh at the hospital where they both work. The sparks fly and the two begin a relationship, but scenes from the following years show that the spark is slowly fading. To mend the relationship, they both decide to take a romantic walk.
Paul’s original song “Corn Puddin” also appears in the episode, when Melissa and Josh finally meet the townspeople who become “the almost new singers of Main Street”.
“Corn pudding, what is it?” Melissa asks. “? A? You wanna tell me you’ve never heard of corn pudding?” Betsy, one of the citizens, replies.
“Oh no, this is a song,” Josh tells Melissa. “You just started another song!”
