The Russian audience appreciated the black comedy of The Wouse Rose with Olivia Kolman and Benedict Cumberbatch for a strong “seven” – and not in vain. Director Jay Rouch (“Fight”, “Scandal”) made a remake of the cult “war of the rose spouses” – only now fight Ivy (Kolman) and Theo (Cumberbatch) for their own house.
Who fights for what?
Ivy is a successful restaurant owner who has financed the construction of the house, Theo is the architect who made it. The marriage cracks on the seams and both will not admit – neither the house nor the principles. Even radical measures are used: Theo decides to pour Ivy Malina into the cake – she has a deadly allergy.
Theo offers Ivy a piece of cake and it starts to choke. While the woman is fighting an attack, he slides her papers to sign the transfer of the house. Ivy puts a signature … but this turns out to be the name Zendei.
Theo still makes an injection of adrenaline and saves his wife. He says he would not let her die, but Ivy does not believe him, takes a gun out and demands that he leaves.
Ivy shoots (for Ostrand) and Theo starts throwing oranges. A fight is tied up: knives flying, even an old gas stove of the Julia -child in the heat of the fight. Everything reaches emotional climax – Theo admits that Ivy always kept.
After a candid conversation, Ivy leaves the weapon, they hug, ask each other for forgiveness. It seems that everything is going to the happy ending, but … because of the gas leak a leak of gas starts in the fight. A few in the bedroom, Kisses, Theo asks a voice assistant to light a fireplace … and at that moment the screen goes out.
Have you died or escaped?
The makers deliberately opened the last. Cumberbatch with humor comments: “They lived happily ever after”, and Kolman supports: “They felt the smell of gas, got out.” But nobody gives direct answers. The director Rouch admits that he wanted to leave the viewer with a sensation:
“They didn’t have enough for a second to repair everything. Until the end there was a connection between them.”
It is vulnerability and honesty that become their real strength. As Cumberbatch says:
“Their hatred is the back of how much they love each other. This is the tragedy.”
