Since the “interstellar” Christopher Nolan came out in 2014 and returned fashion to serious Science Fiction, more than ten years have passed.
But few people remember that long before he was another film – less promoted, but much deeper. He was once before the era, and now it is increasingly called the best science fiction in history. And this is not an exaggeration.
We are talking about the “contact” of Robert Zemeckis – the film adjustment of the novel of the same name by Karl Sagan, published in 1997. The most important role was played by Jody Foster: she plays a scientist who has devoted his whole life to the search for an alien spirit.
And so, when the contact finally becomes possible, she has to face a whole series of barriers – from skeptical colleagues and politicians to religious activists, of whom are played by the young Matthew McConahi. He is one of the main characters of Interstellar.
What makes “contact” special is the honesty. He is not about explosions, not about the battle in space, not about the rescue of the earth 20 minutes before the end of the film.
This is a film about faith and spirit, about science and loneliness, about curiosity as the most important engine of humanity. All this is not served instructively, but thoughtful – and does not lose relevant even after almost thirty years.
For many, “contact” is not only fantastic, but a real philosophical explanation. If you are close to “Interstellar” or “Arrival” Van Denis Villenev, then “Contact” is exactly the film that you should definitely watch.
