When it comes to Science Fiction, most viewers have long been used to making an eye for conventions.
Well, the next hero breathes quietly in the room – and okay. Scientific reliability is generally sacrificed to entertainment. But as it turned out later, not always. NASA experts mentioned the most accurate fantastic film from a scientific point of view – and this is not “interstellar”, and not even “gravity”.
The honorary title went to the photo “Gattaka”, published in 1997. The tape removed by Andrew Nikkol tells about the future where society is built on the principles of genetic selection. The protagonist (Ethan Hawk), not suitable for the standards of the “perfect genome”, is forced to occur as another person to reach his dream – flight to space. The film also played in the spirit of Thurman.
Why Gattaka? According to NASA representatives, the film accurately and thoughtfully reflects the consequences of the widespread use of genetic technologies. The Plotcentrum is not an abstract disasters and not alien beings, but a realistic and frightening possible scenario: a society where social status and professional possibilities depend on DNA.
It is mainly noted:
- The reliability of the scientific basis – from genetics to ethical consequences;
- Scenario – In the film there are no gross assumptions or fantastic exaggerations;
- The relevance of the subject – The threat of artificial selection, elitarianism based on the genome, the influence of technology on social hierarchy.
The name of the film is also not chosen by chance: “Gattaka” is a combination of letters that indicate four head -dna -nucleotide (g, a, t, c). That is, a scientific approach here, even in the name.
NASA, however, was noticed by other films. They came on their list:
- “Contact” (1997) – Robert Zemkykis’s drama about the RadioArstronomer, who received the first signal from alien civilization;
- “Metropolis” (1927) – Classics of Stille Cinema about the future, where society is split into the rich and the poor.
But it is “Gattaka”, according to scientists, that the most sober and accurate science fiction remains, especially in the world where CRISPR, AI and genetic manipulation have already passed from the area of theory in reality.
