He was once called the ‘most stupid film’.
In 1927, Herbert Wells, the author of the Time Machine and one of the founders of Science Fiction, said: “A rather stupid film.” IN The New Yorker They agreed with him: “Meaningless, empty, not convincing.” Almost a hundred years have passed – and now Metropolis has been included in the list of classics of the world cinema, and Christopher Nolan calls him one of his favorite films. Whether the world has changed, or the film, it turned out to be stronger than the critics of the past seemed.
Metropolis is a stupid black -white film by Fritz Lang, released in Germany in 1927. The story of the future, where the city is divided into privileged “upper” and “lower” has long since become a classic. The photo not only influenced Science Fiction, but also on the visual language of modern cinema – from “Running Blade” to the “Dark Knight”.

The plot is built around the conflict between classes, technology, religion and power. The robot created by a crazy scientist calls in the city of Chaos, and the main character – the son of the ruler of Metropolis – tries to find the way of reconciliation. All this was served in the avant -garde, almost surreal form, with the landscape, from which even now the spectators dump the jaw.
Christopher Nolan not only admitted his love for Metropolis, but also quoted him in his own films.
The “begin” gets a lot from the visual concept of Lang, and in the “Dark Knight: The Renaissance of the Legend” he tried to recreate the scale of urban utopia/anti -outopia, such as in German classics.
The film has long been available in the restored version and quietly survived the century. Without sound, without color – but with ideas that do not look outdated in 2025, but frightening accurately.
