Death, of course, happens thanks to Hulu Only murders in the building.A 10-episode crime comedy starring Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez as the three occupants of a New York apartment complex who team up to investigate the death of a neighbor. The star-studded drama, co-produced by Martin and John Hoffman, returns to Streamer on June 28, and now the clever Mabel de Gomez has become a murder suspect. Here Gomez joins Martin (who plays Charles, an old-fashioned TV actor) and Short (his Oliver is a broke Broadway producer) to talk about Dramed’s successful first season, those intimate on-screen moments, and how they work together. . (Hint: this is a permanent blow to the knee.)
Deadline: Your show is so important to Hulu that you showed up at the Disney Upfront presentation in New York last month. How did it go?
Steve Martin: This is a very non-commercial environment with noise and air fans and people who are on the sofa and not on the benches. This isn’t really an audience. Since you don’t understand the audience’s response, you are just suffering. It was fun for us.
ᲒᲝᲛᲔᲡᲘ ᲒᲝᲛᲔᲡᲘ: Just try a few things until it works. I was always doing a prelude to my Disney show The Witches of Waverly Place.
Deadline: Hosting the show was too big. Who was your most unexpected fan?
Gomez: Meryl Streep came to me and congratulated me on the show. It was so sweet. Otherwise, I just have older guys with suede elbows who stand up and say, “Be good at this show.”
Martino: I had done one the other day, which surprised me a lot because I was wearing a mask and had dark glasses. One guy said: “Hi, Steve Martin”. He said, “You look like your character.” I was wearing a hat from the show and I was exactly like the show. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that an amazing story?
Martin Corto: I can’t think of anyone right now, but in minutes I can fix it.
Martino: In fact, I think I told you, “I’m surprised you’re that good.”
Short: Yes. Steve is one. This is the answer.
Deadline: The second season was ordered just two weeks after the first season started. Steve, when you first came up with the idea, did you expect limited runs? Or have you seen a TV series that would last many years?
Martino: Well, you know, I’m very new to the world of TV, so I haven’t even thought about it. I didn’t even go in there. I just had an idea that I thought would be different for the main actors. Take three older actresses and now it’s Selena who …
Gomez: ვიდა He came to ruin everything.
Martino: I told him about the March idea and he said, “You know what? We’re old, we can do it.” When I first thought about it, we weren’t that old. But now we’re officially old.
Short: I am perceived as eternal.
Deadline: Whose idea was it to hire Selena?
Martino: guess where it comes from [executive producer] Dan Fogelman because, as you know, these were three older guys and it’s a very nice idea to include a young woman in the mix. I mean, it’s so obvious. And I said, March is not a young woman’s title …
Short: …Not anymore.
Deadline: Selena, what do you remember on the pitch when you were called up for the first time?
Gomez: They came up with the idea and it sparked the whole conversation about my real kidnapping crime. I was returning from CrimeCon when I got a call and felt it was something I really wanted to do. They were all such lovers. And working with Steve and Mart would be a dream come true.
Deadline: I have to think that during the first season every reporter and viewer should be asked what it was like to work with these comedy legends. Now that everything is old, what did you mean by that?
Gomez: Hate. I wish I had something smart. I am still learning from them. In fact, what I’ve learned from them is to be more insolent. I can say that I have a little more bite. March looks at me and says, “I did it.”
Martino: I wonder how Selena’s character developed. It takes time to build a character. March was always in the right place, I was in the right place, but Selena’s character on the show really got that special flavor.
Short: He had more room for development because it was a secret when we met him.
Deadline: Selena, did you know earlier in the season that you were going to be a suspect?
Gomez: They kept the last few episodes fairly quiet until the very end. I was surprised, but in the best way.
Deadline: Not many millennials have been named Maybell. Have you ever wondered why I called her Maybel?
Gomez: Oh, I feel like Mabel.
Short: This is a good question. Where does this name come from? Were you offered names?
Martino: It is an unusual name. It implies an unusual origin, an unusual upbringing. This is not Charlene.
Deadline: Charlene?
Martino: Charlene was actually called the character of Queen Latifah bring home [a 2003 film that co-starred Martin].
Deadline: Obviously this is a murder secret, but I have to think that we weren’t the only ones who fell in love with these intimate moments. For example, the time when Steve and Amy Ryan [who played Jan] He played instruments in the courtyard. How did this scene come about?
Martino: It was in the script. The initial impulse for me was to play the banjo. I said very similar, this is not a character. So I offered a small concert organ related to Irish music which I love very much. Why are you laughing Selena?
Gomez: It’s just, you know, I think you’re funny.
Martino: I loved Irish music and thought it was wonderful. It is also easy to fake.
Deadline: Well, it was all very exhausting. But it made sense. All right?
Martino: Season 1 was a great effort to be poetic.
Deadline: Martin, I mean it in the best way. Your character, Oliver, was so sad that he couldn’t understand his origins and his debts. Did you have their favorite moment?
Martino: It comes from your whole life.
Short: I enjoyed working with Ryan Brusard, who plays my son. I thought he did it perfectly. I don’t know, I usually tell people what they like. I’m not telling you.
Martino: Marty has slowly established a dramatic character over the past 20 years in various shows, showing his talent for drama. In this show he fits in perfectly with what he already knew. How to go from comedy to drama smoothly.
Short: Thanks, Stefano.
Deadline: Selena, do you have a favorite martini moment? Did you bother him at some point?
Gomez: I mean, March, I’m so sorry.
Short: This is the girl I teach!
Gomez: I just have a lot of funny stories, but I think the really moving thing is her story with the family. I find it just heartbreaking, but it’s also wonderful because it’s the effort he puts into it and how much he loves his family. Also, March was very annoying on set.
Martino: Listen, understand!
Expiration: how irritating is it?
Martino: The actors, when not working, sit on the director’s chairs, in a special room due to Covid, so it is very isolated. We will be three. Selena and I can be six feet away. And by chance, the March chair is 12 meters away. Before you sit down and answer your lines, we’ll start listening The pump is submerged. And you realize that she is leaning on a chair and trying to become a member of the group. I’ll tell you another thing about March.
Short: Someone is online.
Martino: Emmy Awards Season. March has awards, but it doesn’t show them on the shelf. For example, she mostly has a ladder. And on one side of the scale, it somehow got the real weight of the Billy Crystal Awards. He puts his rewards on the other side of the ladder. It’s always a bit one-sided. So you’re looking for rewards to get that straight. I shouldn’t even tell that story.
Gomez: Do you see how I live?
Short: Someone did a play shop last night.
Deadline: Steve, you and the casting director were friends with Sting, so he joined the show. How was your work with him?
Martino: I was sitting on the set doing a secret Financial Times crossword puzzle, which is impossible. So he has another life.
Deadline: The supporting cast is excellent here. Martin, which of the actors of the first season really surprised you?
Short: I’d say Nathan Lane [as Teddy Dimas].
Martino: Yes. Applause.
Short: Obviously Amy Ryan. Jane Lynch [as Sazz Pataki]. Spectacular. It always surprises me when I work in New York. All the people you work with, even if they are daytime gamers, are great. This is the center of great actors.
Deadline: Did you get a lot of requests from actors to join in on the fun in Season 2?
Short: It was exciting to work with Shirley McLain.
Martino: Yes, it’s true. And he’s been calling me a lot since March for the second season.
Deadline: Steve, I now have a tough question about the show on your apartment, specifically the artwork in the kitchen that says “tasty and hot veggies”. Is there a story behind this plant art?
Martino: It was placed there by decorators and is the work of a Californian artist, Ed Rusha. He is a great artist and his works are sold for millions of dollars. They must obtain your permission to view this reproduction. Good boy.
Deadline: March, I will give You are the last word.
Martino: Yes, do it, March, say the last word.
Short: Oh, I love the show and I love people and I love what they give me.
Martino: You are the first person who has heard that he loves paid scales.
