Christopher Nolan is often mentioned today one of the most important directors of the 21st century – and not without reason.
The Dunkirk for Nolan was the first military film and he admits that he was inspired “Go and Watch” Elema Klimov. In an interview he said:
“This is one of the strongest anti -war films in history. Then it is impossible to photograph a war like before.”

Klimov’s film was released in 1985 and even became a shock in the USSR. At the end of 1986 he gathered nearly 30 million spectators and was recognized as the best film of the year according to the “Soviet screen”. At foreign shows, as Klimov himself remembered, there was an ambulance service: some spectators could not stand it. One of those who came to discuss the film said:
“I am a Wehrmacht officer. I went through Poland, Wit -Russia, Ukraine. Everything that is shown is true. And the most difficult for me – that my children and grandchildren will see this film.”
The script has been written since the 70s. Klimov and Adamovich trusted real events and personal memories – hence the ultimate reliability. The film was not nearly released: he was accused of excessive cruelty. But in the end he came out, received the first prize at the Moscow Film Festival and became one of the most discussed films of the decade.
Today, “Go and Look” takes the sixth place in the list “of the 50 best military films of all time” according to Time Out and first place in the list of the best films about the Second World War, and also has 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.
