The legendary story returns.

After the incredible success of the One Piece adaptation, Hollywood producers rushed to purchase the film rights to the popular Japanese manga. Live-action films based on Naruto and Bleach will soon hit big screens.

But not only Americans, but also the Japanese themselves love to turn anime into live-action films.

Recently, cult director Makoto Shinkai officially announced that his legendary anime “5 Centimeters Per Second” will soon be released as a feature film.

After 17 years, a live-action film is being made based on Makoto Shinkai’s cult anime

The anime “5 Centimeters Per Second” was released in 2007 and immediately became a cult classic. Three stories about first love and the beauty of everyday life so touched the audience that the film was watched by as many as 180,000 Kinopoisk users, who rated it 7.9 points.

And now, 17 years after the film’s release, Japanese producers finally decided to turn it into a live-action project. The director of the future film will be Yoshiyuki Okuyama, and Shinkai himself will not take part in the shooting.

But this does not at all mean that the director does not like the idea of adapting his film.

“I am truly grateful to director Okuyama and the rest of the young team for breathing new life into this old work. I am also very motivated that I made an anime film that could live up to their enthusiasm and talent. I’m looking forward to seeing the new “5 Centimeters Per Second” in theaters!” -Shinkai stated.

The film will be released in theaters in the fall of 2025.
