The poignant film became an instant worldwide hit – and is still considered one of the best films about the war.

Although the animation studio Ghibli, which became famous all over the world thanks to the masterpieces of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, no longer delights fans with new products very often (the premiere of the last film, “The Boy and the Bird”, took place in December 2023), millions of people around the world continue to rewatch cartoons that were released many years ago but have become cult favorites. To the delight of loyal fans, it is now much easier to review one of these masterpieces – it has recently appeared in the Netflix collection.

The war drama Grave of the Fireflies, which has now officially joined the already huge streaming collection, certainly left no one indifferent – the film, released in 1988, is still considered one of the best examples of cinema about the atrocities of war.

The plot revolves around two orphans who are forced to wander around a bombed-out Japanese city in search of shelter and food. Realizing that there is no one to help them—even his own aunt is not so concerned about her own nephews—14-year-old Seita makes a strong-willed decision to take full responsibility for his little sister Setsuko.

Together they seek refuge in an abandoned shelter, where only the light of tiny fireflies can cheer up the hapless children – but even they are unable to save the souls of the innocent children, torn apart by the horrors of war.
