Science fiction has long inspired directors, but not everyone knows that many cult sci-fi films are based on literary works. Even those science fiction films that managed to captivate a wide audience did not attract enough attention from the authors of the original source – for many it will certainly come as a surprise that they even have the original source.

Today, Asa Butterfield is best known for Netflix’s Sex Education, but in his youth he starred in Ender’s Game – a fascinating science fiction blockbuster in which war is waged… by children. But Orson Scott Card’s original novel won the Newbell Award and the Hugo Award, the most prestigious literary awards in science fiction. The film turned out well, but many fans (as always) believe the book is better – which could be exactly the case if they’re right.

And for those who tried to understand “Cloud Atlas” while sitting in the theater, maybe the original book will help. Let’s not lie – David Mitchell’s novel of the same name isn’t an easy read either, but it can certainly help you understand the various nonlinear stories of the film adaptation. But then again – just like in the film, all six stories are interrupted and interwoven.
