A painful failure.
Most of Apple TV+’s shows are huge hits, but even a streaming service known for quality productions can sometimes make mistakes.
The platform’s producers spent tens of millions of dollars to create a Taika Waititi fantasy series, and in the end, all they got was headaches and whining from fans.
We’re talking about the series ‘Time Bandits’, a loose remake of Terry Gilliam’s legendary family film. Waititi cast Lisa Kudrow, Jemaine Clement, Mark Gatiss and Matt King in the project. But the star-studded cast never helped the show find its audience.
The story of 11-year-old Kevin, who traveled through time in the company of a bunch of bandits, simply went unnoticed by anyone – even Apple TV+ marketing specialists failed to attract a large audience.
American film critics rated ‘Time Bandits’ as decent 78% “freshness,” but Rotten Tomatoes users saw nothing unusual in the fantasy project. Their verdict is questionable 48%.
In Russia, only a few people watched Time Bandits. In total, 800 Kinopoisk users rated the series, with an average rating of 6.2 points.
Naturally, Apple TV+ executives were unhappy with the performance of Waititi’s new project. Just 54 days after the show’s first episode aired, producers decided to cancel it.
It seems Taika Waititi’s fame as a brilliant sitcom writer is coming to an end. Fans are certain that big streaming projects will no longer want to provide the director with big budgets after the enchanting failure of ‘Time Bandits’.
