Fans of John R. R. Tolkien simply hate it when Hollywood writers change the storylines of the original books. The British writer created such an interesting and realistic fantasy world that even the slightest deviations from the storyline cause dissatisfaction among fans of The Lord of the Rings.
Peter Jackson still dared to take a moment out of the plot of his film trilogy. And the fans were only grateful for this.
The fact is that in the original books, King Théoden was not as close to his niece Eowyn as viewers might think. In the films, Théoden spent a lot of time with Eowyn, who replaced his deceased son.
It was Eowyn who lay beside Theoden on his deathbed, listening to his last words and calming him before he departed for the realm of the dead. But in Tolkien’s books, such a scene simply does not exist.
In the book version of The Lord of the Rings, Theoden’s closest ally was not his niece, but the hobbit Meriadoc. Indeed, the king and a common hobbit became such good friends that they began to spend all their free time together, telling each other stories about life in the Shire and Rohan.
In the original book, it was Meriadoc who stood by Théoden at his death, while Eowyn didn’t even have time to say goodbye to her uncle.
Despite Tolkien’s genius, many fans were not happy with this storyline. The connection between Theoden and Meriadoc seemed a bit strange to readers, so Jackson was only praised for choosing to put Éowyn in Meriadoc’s place.
