In K-pop, popularity doesn’t save you.
BLACKPINK’s Lisa shone brightly at the recent MTV Video Music Awards.
She received many admiring compliments as she walked the red carpet in a custom-made Mugler dress.
Smart girl, beauty queen and simply ideal – these are just some of the insults the singer was once showered with.
In the world of K-pop, however, even a select few must always be on their guard, as a rise can be followed by a sharp fall. And Lisa was no exception to the harsh rule.
The artist was criticized extensively for her musical numbers featuring two of her most popular hits: New Woman and Rockstar.
The idol team took care of everything: a bright stage costume, backup dancers and special effects, but not the soundtrack, which Lisa did not comment on.
The discrepancy between the words in the song and the lip movements caused a wave of outrage on the internet.
“She lip syncs and doesn’t even try! It’s so bad,” one user complained.
“Lisa has been doing this her whole life,” came another loud reaction from the surprised audience.
It’s unlikely the flood of accusations would dampen the star’s spirits, as she took to the stage that night not only to perform, but also to accept an award in the Best K-pop category.

In addition to winning in one of the four categories, Lisa became the first solo artist in history to receive this award twice.
