10 Failed Movies by Famous Directors: Why Did They Actually Make Them?

Even geniuses make mistakes.

Even the most talented directors with impeccable reputations sometimes make mistakes. It happens that the name of the creator promises a masterpiece, but the result causes only bewilderment. How is it that film masters with experience and recognition produce outright failures?

The reasons can be different: creative ambitions, studio pressure or simply a failed experiment. We have collected 10 films by famous directors that unpleasantly surprised viewers or critics (and sometimes both).

10 Failed Movies by Famous Directors: Why Did They Actually Make Them?

Our list may surprise you with some of the films that are considered cult classics today. For example, Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” is his most popular film, despite the fact that even the original author didn’t like the director’s reading. However, some people think that “The Shining” only gained popularity because of the director’s name and Jack Nicholson’s wonderful performance – but everything else leaves much to be desired.

Well, in the case of ‘Avatar’, the box office receipts and the title of the highest grossing film of all time would seem to automatically answer the question of why it was made. However, many fans have big questions about the way the story is constructed in this film.

Against the backdrop of Cameron’s ambitions to create a new cinematic universe in Avatar, these questions are particularly relevant. Avatar’s sequel, The Way of Water, did little to solve the problem – in fact, many fans were confused by the fact that Cameron essentially followed a similar plot formula, only changing the setting from the jungle to the underwater world.
