It would be worth it!
Although books often form the basis for films, not all literary sources reach the general public. Many films are based on little-known works that never became popular with readers, but were able to come to life on the screen.
This is especially true for the horror genre; film adaptations often get much more attention than their original sources. Today we’ve rounded up 10 cult horror films based on books that few people know about. Who knows, maybe we shouldn’t have ignored them all this time?
Almost all movie fans know the main sources on which ‘Dracula’ or ‘It’ are based. But some cult films like The Birds or The Ring, although based on literary material, failed to share the glory with the books – although the books in some situations (as usual) were much better than the film adaptations.
This happened with “The Fortress” – the rather voluminous novel by F. Paul Wilson had to be greatly changed and shortened to fit into the “cinematic” 96 minutes, and even director Michael Mann did not quite agree with the final version of the film. What can we say about the author of the original: of the compliments for the film adaptation, he had only the phrase “visually intriguing.”
Otherwise, says F. Paul Wilson, the film is “absolutely incomprehensible.” Most viewers agree with him, although the beginning of the film intrigued many – all the more regrettable were the climax and the ending.
