In Russia, no one had even heard of him.
While Netflix and Prime Video are banking on big-name actors and big budgets to make their shows, Apple TV+ producers are experimenting with throwing money at the weirdest shows. And critics are loving the streaming service’s approach: Apple shows consistently earn rave reviews from film experts and casual viewers alike.
It looks like Apple TV+ has released a series so insane that only true connoisseurs of the weird in cinema will enjoy it.
On July 10, the comedy project “Sunny” starring Rashida Jones was released on the streaming platform. The series is created by Katie Robbins, who rose to fame as the head writer of Showtime’s underrated drama The Affair.
“This is a dark thriller-comedy about a woman who loses her husband and son in a plane crash and is given a pet robot as a consolation. Together they try to figure out what happened. And I will definitely describe this show as ‘crazy,’ because that’s the most appropriate word,” Robbins said of her show.
The series came out really crazy – the chic atmosphere of the future world and the charming robot hero perfectly complemented the slightly scary plot about a grieving mother.

American critics raved about Sunny. The series received 90% “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, and Robbins and Jones are already tipped for Golden Globe nominations.
But in Russia, no one noticed the release of a new hit from Apple TV +. Almost two months after the release, “Sunny” was rated by only 317 Kinopoisk users. And the rating of the show is only average 6.6 points.
