This explains his desire to work with filmmakers and even try himself in this field.
However, the writer found a special charm in the television format, which offers unique storytelling possibilities that the feature film lacks.
In a conversation with Rolling Stone, Stephen King discussed the evolution of television series and how they are ahead of feature films in all things creative experimentation:
“We’re not talking about shows like NCIS or Crime Scene Investigation, which repeat the same thing over and over again. And not even Mad Men, which I don’t like, but about structured and exciting work, in which films resemble short stories.”
The author had five examples of such masterpieces in mind:
- “The Walking Dead”
- “Vomiting bad”
- “Sons of Anarchy”
- “Bridge”
- “Americans”.
King’s appreciation was not limited to these serial works. The 2002 “Shield” holds a special place in his heart.
“In the very first episode, Michael Chiklis, who played the main character, turns around and kills his fellow police officer. I thought television had undergone incredible changes at that point,” the writer said.
Based on true events, the project called for questioning traditional portrayals of the police and proposed bold narrative challenges, breaking new ground and raising socio-political issues.
It was on the air for seven seasons, but many Russians still don’t know about it.
