Many viewers noticed the similarities.
In 2022, a horror film called “The Male Gender” was released. And the director, Alex Garland, said he was inspired to make some episodes of the anime “Attack on Titan.” We tell you where to look for references.
What inspired the director?
We won’t spoil the plot too much, so as not to spoil the fun and horror of watching for those who haven’t seen the film. Let’s just say that the film opens with a widow arriving in a town populated by suspiciously similar men.
Somehow, not the nicest guys appear in the film, and the director borrowed their habits and facial expressions, as well as the main character played by actor Rory Kinnear, from the anime.
“We were watching Attack on Titan with our daughter. And I was just amazed at how simple and mundane the things that make the Titans scary are. Like, they just have bigger eyes or their movements are a little bit clumsier, but this is so terrifying. It felt so alien and so powerful at the same time. I thought it was way cooler than the thoughts that were going through my head,” Garland said.

So if, when you see Kinnear’s character, you also have thoughts about the titan who killed Eren Yeager’s mother, don’t be surprised. It was meant to be.

By the way, Isayama himself got inspiration for creating the Titans from his not very successful experience in an internet cafe. Then one of the drunken patrons grabbed him by the collar. It was this face, in which you can do nothing, that prompted the mangaka to create these scary creatures.
