In Russia, this cutie was heavily criticized.
It seems that who besides Russian viewers knows such a character as Cheburashka. What if we told you that he is very loved in Japan? And that some time ago they even released their own series of cartoons about him? Looking ahead, spoiler: he turned out very cute.
Why do the Japanese love Cheburashka?
After World War II, Japan simply embraced the kawaii culture, which is characterized by everything cute, adorable and fluffy. And Cheburashka fits perfectly into this concept thanks to its cuteness. As a result, the Japanese entered into an agreement with the Soyuzmultfilm studio and in 2009 released their animated series called “Cheburashka Arere?” (which translates as “What kind of Cheburashka is this?”).
The cartoon has a very cute drawing. It has something cozy from our old cartoons at the same time, but at the same time there are characteristic Japanese features in it.

In total, the series has 26 episodes, each lasting no more than two or three minutes. They showed the daily life of Gena and Cheburashka, and sometimes they contain very moving reflections on what happiness is and what the meaning of life in general is.

On IMDb the cartoon came in just short of a confident seven – only 0.1 points. But on Kinopoisk it was rated worse: 5.7 points. Apparently the hard-core Russian viewer is not willing to share his character with foreigners.
“I am, of course, biased, as probably every Russian viewer. But redraw our ‘Crocodile Gena’?! Mother of Japan, forgive my high style! It is not perfect,” write users of the portal.
