There are not many decent films about aliens in Russia. Most viewers will probably think of nothing but Bondarchuk’s “Attraction”. But the recently concluded young film festival VOICES opened a new product – Ivan Sosnin’s home film “Alien” (2024), which also won in the “Best Director” category. We will tell you what the picture is about and why it is better than Bondarchuk’s works.
What is the movie about?
The story revolves around a hearing-impaired man who dreams of one day communicating with alien inhabitants. The locals consider him a common fool: he lives in a kind of hut made of garbage, draws crop circles and picks up radio waves in the hope of getting in touch with an alien civilization. But one fine day, the one he has been calling for so long finally comes to him. This is where the fun begins.
Why is the photo worth seeing?
If we compare “The Alien” with “Attraction” and its sequel “Invasion”, filmed by Bondarchuk, then the first one wins significantly. Bondarchuk’s works are usually criticized for their ridiculous and boring plot, bad acting and unreasonably high budget. For example, on Kinopoisk the following reviews are most often found:
“This is the first film where while watching it in the theater I didn’t just spit, get indignant, laugh, or try to figure out what it was all about, I wanted to go home.”
But Sosnin’s film pleased the critics, largely because it was filmed without any government support and turned out no worse than films with huge budgets.
“Sosnin and the team, as they say, made an independent film out of pure enthusiasm, without government support. At the same time, the themes of people with special needs, fairy tales, science fiction, human aggression and goodness are revealed in such a way that sometimes no amount of subsidies or orders from high structures can realize.”“,” noted one of the experts on Kinopoisk.
So if you’re looking for a good home movie for the evening, this one is definitely worth watching.
