In the original, many aspects would simply remain incomprehensible.

Everyone is already used to the fact that in cartoons, depending on the country, the name can be changed because it sounds obscene in the local language, but what to do if entire characters are replaced? If you watch most Japanese versions of popular Disney and Pixar cartoons, you will probably be surprised.

“Zootopia”, 2016

Remember the scene with the TV news presenters, the snow leopard and the moose? But apart from Russia, the moose was only seen by spectators in France, Italy and Canada and the United States. And only in the last two countries did they get the gist of the joke.

The character’s name was Peter Moosebridge, moose – moose in English, and he was voiced by famous TV presenter Peter Mansbridge. Here’s a simple pun that most other viewers probably wouldn’t understand. Therefore, Disney had to ‘change’ the host for other countries.

In New Zealand and Australia the snow leopard’s counterpart was the koala, who called it David Coalabelle, in Brazil the jaguar, in Japan the raccoon dog and in China the panda.

“Monster Academy”, 2020

Edits have already been made here in the Russian version of the cartoon. In the original, Randall brings Mike 7 cupcakes, the inscriptions at the top of which spell out “Be my pal” – “Be my friend”. It is clear that in the Russian language (and in all others too) these words would take up many more letters, and the creators of the cartoon found an elegant solution.

Letters replaced emojis on the tops of cupcakes for all countries except the US.

“Puzzle”, 2015

In one scene, Riley is fed broccoli – the baby in a high chair categorically refuses to eat and throws pieces of food at her parent. Absolutely all countries in the world would understand this joke unequivocally: broccoli is ugh! – but not in Japan. It turns out that Asians love broccoli, so Pixar replaced it with green peppers.

Remember how the heroine’s father mentally watches football during dinner? In the original version, which was shown in the US, the parent watched hockey, because in the United States ‘soccer’ is much less popular.
