10 best Chinese historical dramas to watch in one go

The more episodes the better.

Just a few years ago, it seemed that no other series could surpass “The Magnificent Century” in the number of palace intrigues, political conspiracies and love tragedies, but Chinese producers bravely rose to the challenge.

These 10 historical dramas have proven that it’s easy to keep viewers on the edge of their seats for 70 episodes or more, even without the addition of fantasy elements to the plot:

The series “Langya List” received special attention, which connoisseurs of the genre called “the best that the world of dramas has presented.” The plot follows the commander Lin Shu, who is falsely accused of rebelling against the emperor. Forced to flee, the hero hides in the world of Jianghu warriors for twelve years, after which he returns to his homeland to avenge injustice. The drama not only became popular, but also won awards and became one of the best TV projects of 2015.

A slave can rise to unprecedented heights – that’s what “The Legend of Chu Qiao” is about. The main character survives an encounter with wolves, but ends up in the den of even more terrible predators – the aristocrats of Western Wei – where she becomes a witness and direct participant in a bloody struggle for power. Thanks to a loving patron, former slave Chu Qiao gains an unexpected status.

All fans of Zhang Ziyi (“Memoirs of a Geisha”, “House of Flying Daggers”) will love the drama “Empire of the Monarch”. The actress played Shangyang, a girl from the ruling family who wants to marry her beloved prince with all her heart. Instead of the long-awaited engagement, the heroine, as a reward for her courage, is given to a displaced colonel, for whom feelings will go a long way from hatred to love.
