The film academy was asked about the contribution as part of a roadshow meeting

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences turned its annual membership meeting into a roadshow Saturday morning, held at the Lucasfilm office in San Francisco and streamed on the membership website.

In general, the proceedings were routine, as CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang discussed the state of the institution and underscored a message he sent to the group Friday along with audited financial data. “Overall, our financial results are positive,” Kramer said in the email, despite the stress of a year of strikes, Covid recovery and support for the museum.

During Saturday’s meeting, a question from a member caught the attention of at least some audience members. Would the academy support those struggling to pay their $450 annual membership fee after months of strike-related unemployment?

The answer was: Yes, there is a plan to remedy the situation — good news for those coming off one of Hollywood’s toughest years in recent memory.

For those lucky enough to be in the Bay, the meeting was followed by a reception at the nearby Members-Plus-One Sessions restaurant.
