Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series, which highlights the year’s most talked about screenplays, continues with Salt burns, the brutally dark satirical thriller written and directed by Emerald Fennell. The film is her second film and follows in the footsteps of the Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay Promising young woman.
Stylish and quirky, Salt burns made a splash at Telluride’s world premiere before hitting theaters in November. Set in England in the mid-2000s, the Amazon MGM Studios title tells the story of Oliver (Barry Keoghan), an Oxford student who initially struggles to find his place at university before a sly social climb start. After finding his way into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi), he is invited to the estate of his eccentric and very rich family for a summer he will never forget.
Without completely spoiling the viewing experience, Fennell revealed that she plans to do so after a screening at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles in September Salt burns was to make a “vampire film” that focused on the theme of “fetishization of beauty.” Explaining her vision at Deadline’s Contenders Film: London event, she explained that she wanted to make something “about desire and this very complicated relationship with the things that we really want, can’t have and can never get back.”
Also with Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Archie Madekwe, Alison Oliver and Carey Mulligan. Salt burns is produced by Fennell alongside Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara of LuckyCap, a trio who also released the record-breaking album this year Barbie.
