“Creed III” composer Joseph Shirley said that dr. Dre inspired a “unique taste” in film music – sound and film music

What does it take to create the sound of a boxing champion? It seems that it takes a mighty force of trumpets, heavy drums and fear to defeat legendary music producer Dr. Dre told me not to disappoint Creed III Composer Joseph Shirley, who attended Deadline’s Sound & Screen live music event to discuss the film.

Consider it Creed III When the protagonist, Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Creed, tries to make a home for himself and his family in Los Angeles, it only makes sense that West Coast rap icon Dr. Dre not only had an influence on the film’s music, but was also hired as the film’s musical consultant.

“One of the tricks of this score was the way we recorded it [hip-hop] “Designing songs to fit within the landscape of the score,” Shirley said of his attribution to the co-founder of Death Row Records. “The way the film opens, we start with my own reinterpretation of one of his classics, ‘The Watcher,’ and that’s a common thread throughout the film.”

Shirley also half-jokingly added that creating Adonis’ training montage in the film was the scariest moment in the studio. “It was one of the scariest moments working on the film, in which a Dr. Dre hit, but then [other] The scariest thing was that I took it to Dr. Dre had to send. He is a producer, a legendary genius, and here I am trying to reproduce what he did, then I need his approval. It was crazy, but we did it.”

On the tracks of I believe And Creed II Composer Ludwig Göransson also told Shirley what it was like to work on the soundtrack with Jordan, who also made his directorial debut for the film.

Creed III It just had its own flavor and quality in the way it was shot, in the way Michael directed the actors, in the way he acted, in the mood and flow of the story. In my opinion, the emotional landscape was sometimes quite different than in the first two films. So we wanted to give it our own unique musical touch,” said Shirley. “And one of the ideas Michael and I were working on was finding ways to use hip-hop production as a main part of the gumbo of the score. So there are a lot of hard calls. You could hear very sharp drums there and some of those sounds were even made specifically for Damien’s character (Jonathan Majors). His backstory involved him being in prison and watching Adonis grow up in the spotlight and so on. So I actually sampled a prison cell to create some of these sounds.

Come back on Monday for the panel video.
