She said yes! Matildas star Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis confirm engagement after months of speculation: ‘She was everything to me’

Matilda superstar Sam Kerr and her long-term girlfriend Kristie Mewis have confirmed their engagement.

Mewis (30) shared the happy news with People magazine on Friday and called Kerr her “biggest supporter”.

‘[She’s] “My biggest supporter who always listens to me, all my crazy antics, my whining and my complaints,” she said.

Rumor has it that Kerr and Mewis became engaged after the American football player celebrated her 30th birthday in September.

Fans congratulated Kerr at the time after Australia’s biggest soccer star posted a photo on social media of her with a gold ring on her wedding finger.

The Matildas forward included the image in an Instagram post, accompanied by the simple caption “September people x”, while two other photos show a jeweled ring on Mewis’ left ring finger.

It was the first time the ring was clearly visible on Mewis’ hand after fans accidentally got a first glimpse of it when she appeared in a promotional video for a new video game.

Mewis’ left hand appeared to be deliberately hidden in recent photos of the couple as speculation reached its peak.

She left the comment “ily x” – slang for “I love you” – on Kerr’s post, followed by another reading: “Lushhhhh.”

The loved-up couple celebrated Kerr’s 30th birthday earlier that month with a photo from their celebratory dinner, in which the Australian can be seen with her hand wrapped around Mewi’s waist – and her left hand carefully positioned so as not to show a ring.

Mewis featured in her team Gotham FC’s promotional clip for new video game EA FC 24, with the ring on her left hand accidentally visible in the footage – but it wasn’t lost on the couple’s fans.

Earlier this month, she shared a post on her Instagram story showing what appeared to be her holding Kerr’s hand.

Again, most of the fingers on Mewis’ left hand are not visible in the photo, leading some to believe she may have hidden a ring.

The couple met while both playing for rival clubs in the American League in 2019.

During the 2020 Covid lockdown, they chatted online for almost four months before spending two weeks together in quarantine, where they quickly fell in love.

The couple continued their romance ahead of the 2021 Olympics, where they were photographed together – after the USA’s semi-final against Australia.

Their on-court embrace made headlines as Kerr’s split from her former long-term partner – another American club player, Nikki Stanton – had yet to become public.

Their international romance has since been widely documented on social media and both women have hundreds of thousands of followers.

“We are not private citizens. I enjoy sharing my story. I like to share who I am outside of football. Football is five percent of my life,” Kerr told British publication Gaffer earlier this year.

In August, the pair traveled to Sydney while Kerr played with the Matildas at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In a twist, Kerr faced Kristie’s ex-girlfriend Rachel Daly, who played for England, in the semi-final.

Kerr and Mewis are the undisputed power couple in women’s football and the pair have gained thousands of followers since the height of their relationship.
