It’s an iconic dress designed by Carolina Herrera, which premiered last November at the welcoming ceremony hosted by Carl XVI Gustaf and Silvia of Sweden, on the state trip planned by the King and Queen in the Scandinavian country. These awards are presented every year by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and were received this year by the researchers Francisco José García Vidal Hermenegildo García Gómez, Montserrat Vilà Planellas, Luis Vega González, María José Alonso Fernández, Jesús Fernando San Miguel Izquierdo, Purificación Muñoz Canoves, Aníbal Ollero Baturone, Jordi Galí Garreta and Margarita Diaz-Andreu. An award ceremony highlighting the extraordinary quality of each of the candidatures presented in this edition.

These awards were created in 1982 with the aim of recognizing the merit of those Spanish researchers who perform outstanding professional work of international importance in their respective research and scientific fields. These awards are intended to recognize their outstanding contribution to the advancement of science, to the best knowledge of people and their coexistence, to the transfer of technology and to the advancement of humanity. The total amount of these prizes totals 300,000, with an economic endowment of 30,000 euros for each of the categories. It is the second time that the ten modalities of these awards have been convened in the same year. In this edition, a total of 119 applications were received, of which 115 were admitted: 27 women and 88 men. In order to put an end to possible controversy, the publication of these awards is governed by the principles of publicity, transparency, equality and non-discrimination; and in this case the decision of the ten judges was unanimous.
