Aaron Sorkin, his adaptation of the classic musical Lerner & Loewe Camelot Tony, which opened on Broadway earlier this month, is a nominee for Best Book of a Musical, Tony’s Administrative Committee decided today.
The Camelot The book was originally written by Alan Jay Lerner (Frederick Loewe composed the music), but Sorkin’s revisions for the new Lincoln Center Theater production were apparently extensive enough to be considered for a Tony Award.
Among other things, Sorkin heavily revised the dialogue, changed Morgan Le Fay’s character from a wizard to a scientist, and generally eliminated the supernatural elements found in the original book. (Camelot was adapted by Lerner and Loewe from the 1958 novel by TH White The former and future king.)
The Tony panel’s decision was one of many decisions made at today’s third and final meeting. The Tony nominations will be announced on Tuesday and the awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, June 11.
In addition to their other awards, the committee ruled that both Laura Linney and Jessica Hecht were eligible for their performances in the Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play category Summer 1976.
