Betty Gilpin played many different roles in her career, but perhaps none as in Mrs. Davis, which debuted on Peacock this week. In the new series, she plays Simone, a nun who is recruited to fight the title character, who is actually an algorithm, and find the “Holy Grail”. It’s a wild action show created by Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof in which Gilpin faces many physical challenges along the way.
As she tells me in this week’s installment of my Deadline video series, The Actor’s Side, it’s a show she’s very much looking forward to and hopes will find audiences. Of course, she’s no stranger to physically challenging acting. Consider those three back-to-back Emmy nominations for supporting actress she received for her role as a wrestler SMOOTH? Other recent projects have also given Gilpin a chance to stretch, including Hunting, tomorrow’s war And American Gods among many others.
But Mrs. Davis comes extremely timely, and as Gilpin tells me, the rise of AI in our lives has only increased since the series was made and now regularly makes headlines. She finds the endless possibilities fascinating and a little terrifying, especially for actors who could replace their jobs with advanced robots. Mrs. Davis even went so far as to use AI technology to write the titles of each episode’s scripts.
We also talk about her Zoom sessions with real nuns to prepare for the role, the importance of faith and science in the storyline, the groundbreaking costume she gets to wear, her father’s influence, and more. Click on the video above to watch our conversation.
Join me every Wednesday during Emmy season for another installment of The Actor’s Side.
