Today Extra host David Campbell celebrates nine years of sobriety and shares a rare photo of his decision to give up alcohol

Today Extra presenter David Campbell celebrated nine years of sobriety on Thursday.

The 49-year-old TV presenter marked the milestone by sharing a rare photo on Instagram of the moment he decided to stop drinking.

“Nine years sober this week. I lived in Broome with my wife and son (pre-twins). This happy picture of me is when I made the decision. I’m still happy,” he wrote.

“As if a weight had been lifted from my shoulders (and liver). Stay strong. Get help when you’re struggling.’

David is father to son Leo (12) and twins Betty and Billy (8) with his 15-year-old wife Lisa Hewitt.

On his eight-year anniversary of sobriety in April 2022, David tweeted that getting sober was the “best decision I’ve made”.

Was eight years sober this week. Best decision I made for myself, my family and my mental health,” he tweeted.

He ended his post with some words of encouragement for others who may be struggling with something similar: “When you think about it, you know it’s great.”

David has been open about his struggles with alcohol in the past, admitting that while he wasn’t an addict, it was a slippery slope.

“Nine years sober this week. I lived in Broome with my wife and son (pre-twins). This happy picture of me is when I made the decision. I’m still happy,” he wrote

“I was part of our ‘drink culture’. Was I an alcoholic? NO. Do I tend to become one? Yes. I would love to,” he wrote in an April 2015 editorial for The Daily Telegraph.

“There is addiction on both sides of my family and I was standing in the doorway of a very dark room.”

David is the son of legendary rocker Jimmy Barnes, who is open about his own drinking problems.

“My father has, you might say, a reputation for being the loudest party rock star Australia has produced,” he wrote.

As he said to me on the phone today, “I should have stopped you from drinking.” Except it didn’t. It had more or less the opposite effect.’

The multi-talented star said he finally decided to get sober for his young family.

“I grew up with it,” he told The Father Hood in 2019.

“I’ve seen my father struggle with addiction, and I’ve also seen the devastating impact that alcohol-related incidents in my family can have on children and on me.”

He added: “I knew this was not the path to aging. You don’t want to put a child at risk with that.”
