Oscars: David Byrne, Stephanie Hsu & Son Lux perform “This Is A Life” at the awards ceremony

35 years after he won the Oscar for Bernardo Bertolucci’s original score the last emperor David Byrne returned to the 95th annual awards ceremony with the Oscar-nominated song “This is A Life”. Everything, everywhere, all at once along with the picture’s composer and songwriter, Son Lux, and Oscar-nominated supporting actress Stephanie Hsu. Japanese singer Mitski sings the end credits song with Byrne in the film.

Ryan Lott, Byrne and Mitski wrote the music for “This Is A Life”, with lyrics by Lott and Byrne.

Byrne was the founder, singer and guitarist for the award-winning band Talking Heads. Byrne shared his Oscar win in 1988 Last Emperor with composers Ryuichi Sakamoto and Cong Su.

Hsu has won several awards this season, most recently four honors at last night’s SAG Awards, including Marquee Ensemble in a Motion Picture. Everything, everywhere, all at once was nominated for a whopping 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Score for Son Lux, and won top honors at the PGA and DGA this season.

Hsu’s other credits include The wonderful Mrs. Maisel, an upcoming appearance at Rian Johnson Poker face alongside Natasha Lyonne, to appear in the upcoming Disney+ series American-born Chinese, and to star alongside Ryan Gosling in the upcoming movie The Fall Guy.

Experimental music group Son Lux consists of founder and frontman Lott, Ian Chang and Rafiq Bhatia.

“This Is A Life” competes against “Applause” for the Oscar for best song Tell it like a womanperformed by Sofia Carson and Diane Warren at the ceremony, from Hold My Hand. Top Gun: Maverick, “lift me up”. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Is performed by Rihanna and “Naatu Naatu” from RRR. The 95th Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, March 12 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

Byrne had the hit Broadway concert performance American utopia which was held in New York before and after the pandemic and featured many of his hit singles from Talking Heads. Byrne received a special Tony Award for the show, one Emmy away from an EGOT. Spike Lee directed the concert film version of American utopia which had its world premiere at the 2020 Toronto Film Festival and aired on HBO.
