A prequel series titled “Welcome to Derry,” based on Andy Muschietti’s “It” films, has been officially ordered from HBO Max.
The news was reported on Thursday and several people involved in the production of the show made statements through Variety to express their excitement about the show.
The two films, the second of which was promoted with nightmare-inducing posters, are based on Stephen King’s famous novel of the same name.
While finer plot details are being kept from the public, a released logline offers some background on the project.
Set in the world of Stephen King’s It universe, Welcome to Derry is based on King’s It novel and expands on the vision developed by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the feature films It and It Chapter Two.

The director of both “It” films, Andy Muschietti, and his sister Barbara said they are excited to continue the story they started with the films.
“It’s an epic story that will hold masses far beyond what we can discover in our It movies. We can’t wait to share the depths of Steve’s novel with all its heart, wit, humanity and horror,” they said.
The brother-sister duo came up with the story for the show, and Andy will direct several episodes.
The author also spoke to the media to show his enthusiasm for the project.
King said, “I’m thrilled that the story of Derry, Maine’s most haunted city, continues, and I’m thrilled that Andy Muschietti is overseeing the spooky celebrations…Red balloons everywhere!”
Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max’s head of original content, released a statement discussing how the show’s setting will be further fleshed out as part of the project.
“This prequel will expand the canvas for It stories and take fans deeper into the haunted, enchanting city of Derry,” she said.
It is based on King’s novel which was originally published in 1986 to great acclaim.
