Hong Chau rose to the Oscars and tamed The Whale and her menu to work with great directors – the actors’ side

Hong Chau’s time has come. She was in London last weekend to celebrate her nomination for a supporting role The whale at the BAFTA Film Awards. And in about two and a half weeks, she’ll take a prime seat at the 95th Academy Awards, where she’s also nominated for supporting actress for that film.

She also garnered hype for her role as a clumsy restaurant manager in the fall hit Searchlight. The menu, and featured prominently at the Cannes Film Festival last May, as one of her upcoming films, to show yourself Premiere in the official competition. Add to that her current TV work on Rian Johnson’s new Peacock series Poker face.

In fact, I thought Chaus’s time really came in 2017 when she made a great breakthrough with Alexander Payne To reduce for which she won Golden Globe, Critics Choice and SAG nominations. However, the film was a disappointment at the box office, and although everyone thought she would be nominated for an Oscar, she was not. Now they’ve made up for it by recognizing her amazing job as caretaker of Brendan Fraser’s 600-pound Charlie. the whale, and as she tells me in this week’s installment of my Deadline video series The Actor’s Side, there’s plenty more to come as she wraps up production on big new 2023 movies like Wes Anderson’s asteroid city and Yorgas Lathimos’s And…. She will also be seen in another expected role as the president’s chief of staff in the upcoming limited series The night agent.

For someone who was born in Thailand after her parents fled Vietnam by boat and then immigrated to the US – where she eventually went to Boston University and focused on creative writing before discovering she had a talent to have acting – it’s all pretty impressive. We talk about everything and more.
