Martin was initially very concerned about this character being distorted on the show.
Very often, when filming books, directors “simplify” the characters. However, in the series “Game of Thrones” it turned out very differently.
The courtesan Shaya in the book is a minor character who acts rather stereotypically. George Martin himself noted that the girl in the books was “flat as a plate.” In the series, this character had feelings for Tyrion, took care of him and Sansa. Shaya was even jealous of him because of the future Queen of the North.
In an interview on YouTube, Martin stated that the series character has much more depth, as well as a wider emotional range. According to him, this is the merit of not only the directors, but also the actress Sibel Kekilli.
