Just days before 2003’s romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days celebrates its 20th birthday, Matthew McConaughey reveals the bizarre reason he took on the role.
In December, the 53-year-old actor’s co-star Kate Hudson revealed that she “pushed” McConaughey to star with her, telling then-Paramount CEO Sherry Lansing that McConaughey was her “first choice” for the role of Benjamin Barry. .
But even after being offered the role, he was torn between accepting the project or not. After a chance meeting with a fortune teller, he finally made up his mind.
“I remember walking down Sunset Boulevard one night debating whether or not to do it, when this man suddenly appeared out of nowhere – he was a fortune-telling guru [and] say, ‘Can I tell you your future real quick?’” McConaughey began.

Hudson was hooked on the project before McConaughey revealed that she immediately had the idea to star with him.

After McConaughey was cast, it brought a new set of challenges, as director Donald Petrie explained.

“So we took his father and made him a Navy man so he’s stationed in different places around the world and Celia Weston who came in to play the mother, she’s from the south,” he added.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days grossed $105.8 million domestically and $177.5 million worldwide on a $50 million budget.
