Sam Taunton admitted he was “terrified” of being replaced Peter Helliar at Channel Ten’s The Project.

The 30-year-old comedian confessed to The Daily Telegraph that he was nervous about joining the show and replacing Peter, who he described as part of Australia’s “comedic landscape”.

“Pete and Hughesy – they are definitely part of the Australian comedy landscape and they were so famous before the show started,” he said.

“I was kind of like ‘how should I go?’ And I wasn’t afraid I’d screw it up – I don’t think I have yet,” he added.

Sam, who studied political science, explained that he felt taken at the deep end.

“I felt like I was in charge of a busy coffee shop on a Saturday morning because I had never worked in a coffee shop before,” he said.

“I was like, ‘How am I going to do this?’

Sam and comedian Michael Hing were revealed as Peter’s replacements in December following a mass exodus from the show.

Sam appears on the show Monday to Thursday while Michael joins Hamish and Georgia Tunny on Friday and Sunday nights.

“It’s a fresh cast and we’re all looking forward to creating something new and energetic, which I think people are really going to respond to,” Sam said at the time.

Peter announced that he was leaving The Project in November, explaining that he made the decision to quit following the departure of his co-host Carrie Bickmore.

“Carrie, you said the other day that you were happy to leave The Project now that you still love it and I still love the show. Really,” he explained.

“The project means a lot to me. It has done great things for me. I interviewed Luke Skywalker once… and I’m looking forward to seeing what the show will be like in the future.”
