The Art Directors Guild presents the William Cameron Menzies Award to Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro in honor of his visually stunning and emotionally rich work. Del Toro will receive the award on April 27e ADG’s Excellence in Production Design Awards on Saturday, February 18 at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
Del Toro initially received credit for writing and directing Kronos, which debuted at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Mercedes Benz Award and more than 20 international awards. Among the most famous films by Del Toro are Pan’s Labyrinthwhich won Oscars for art direction, cinematography and make-up and The shape of the water, which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, as well as Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Production Design and Best Original Score. His latest project Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro, continues his lifelong love of animation and making stop-motion films. Additional credits are included Devil’s Spine, Hellboy, Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak, and nightmare alley.
Del Toro is also a prolific producer of animated films and television. His EP credits include Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3, pussy in boots 1 and 2, and rise of the Guardians; including production credits The Book of Life.
Previous recipients of the Menzies Prize include Robert Osborne, John Musker and Ron Clements, Syd Mead and Denis Villeneuve.
“Guillermo del Toro surprisingly brought humanity to non-human characters and full existence to environments that could be considered lifeless by incorporating strong narrative imagery into his collaborations with production designers,” said Coates. “The Art Directors Guild is delighted to celebrate his compelling work, which has indelibly pushed the boundaries of production design to new heights.”
