Tommy’s son Ryan (Rhys Connah) has left school to go on trial, only for his grandfather Richard (Derek Riddell) to show up as part of his investigation into the Kneževićs.

After two of Knežević’s men caused a distraction outside, Tommy left the courtroom and sped through the streets of Leeds.

As he left the court, he hit a nearby newsagent before stealing a bike and cycling equipment and driving through Leeds in disguise.

In the final five minutes of the final installment of the hit BBC drama, there were major developments across the two storylines as Rob Hepworth discovered his wife Joanna’s body and Tommy made his great escape.

One fan explained that the show “makes it impossible to go to bed early” as the episode ended with another cliffhanger and the prospect of a final confrontation between Cawood and Royce.

Meanwhile, the series’ other major storyline unfolded as Joanna’s disappearance raised suspicions.

In episode three, Faisal Bhatti (Amit Shah) kills Joanna in a fit of rage after her plan to kill Rob is revealed.

Despite her husband Rob insisting it was in her character to disappear, Joanna’s worried parents were seen at the police station to lodge a missing persons report with Sergeant Cawood.

After being questioned at home, Rob saw a suitcase in the garage and opened it to find the gruesome scene of his wife’s body stuffed inside.

Happy Valley: Four Fan Theories

Viewers are still scratching their heads over how the various subplots connect.

Viewers praised the show’s writer, Sally Wainwright, for her ability to bring two storylines to a climax in a matter of minutes.

“To build this amount of tension in one episode takes skill, but to build this amount of tension on two separate storylines within one episode requires writing and directing of the highest quality. #HappyValley,” one fan declared.

Another pointed out that “Happy Valley makes it impossible to go to bed early on Sundays. Each episode leaves a heartbeat of around 200 BPM.

‘Jesus Christ. I didn’t breathe for about ten minutes,” agreed another.

Others pointed out that Cawood’s suspicions that Tommy was up to something were proven correct again during his trial, when they asked her colleagues and family to “always listen to Catherine if she has any suspicions.”

Tommy’s escape suggests a final showdown between him and Cawood is underway, but as this is the final series, some viewers are starting to worry that Sarah Lancashire’s lead will not carry through to retirement.

“If bad things happen to Catherine at the end of this series, I’m not sure I can forgive Sally Wainwright and co.” Author JoJo Moyes tweeted.

Happy Valley continues on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
