The Recording Academy today announced the recipients of the 2023 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, including Bobby McFerrin, Nirvana, Ma Rainey, Nile Rodgers, Slick Rick “The Ruler,” The Supremes, and Heart’s Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson.
The Lifetime Awards are among the awards announced by the Academy today to be presented at the Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards ceremony on February 4 at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, one day before the 65th Annual Grammy Awards. In addition to the Lifetime Achievement Awards, today’s announcement includes recipients of the Trustees Award, Technical Grammy Award and Best Song for Social Change Award.
Other honorees announced today include Trustees Award recipients, including this year’s music photographer Henry Diltz, jazz pianist and music educator Ellis Marsalis and Stax Records founder Jim Stewart.
Posthumous awards to Kurt Cobain of Nirvana; Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard of the original Supremes series; Rainey; marshal; and Stewart.
This year’s Technical Grammy Award winners also include The Audio Engineering Society, the only professional society dedicated solely to the advancement of audio technology; and Dr Andy Hildebrand, creator of the groundbreaking software program Auto-Tune.
The winner for Best Social Change Song will be announced at a later date.
