Brad Pitt is asking a court to order Angelina Jolie to produce financial records from 2017 to 2019, after his ex-wife claimed in a cross-complaint that she had "largely put her career on hold" and forwent "years of compensation" following their 2016 separation.
According to court documents obtained by The Daily Mail, Jolie, 51, had agreed to produce financial records covering 2017 through 2021, but has so far only turned over documents for 2020 and 2021. Pitt, 62, is now seeking to compel production of records showing her annual income and profit participation statements for the earlier years, 2017 to 2019.
The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for both Pitt and Jolie for comment.
Pitt's filing states that Jolie's cross-complaint alleges she put her career on hold after the 2016 separation, forgoing years of compensation, and that Pitt held "substantial leverage and control" over her due to her financial condition at the time. The filing adds that by 2019, Jolie concluded she needed to sell her interest in Miraval to obtain "financial independence" from him.
The filing also states that on February 23, 2026, Jolie withdrew her earlier agreement to provide declarations responsive to Request Nos. 81 and 82 for the full 2017-2021 period, as well as her agreement to produce participation statements from that same span. Pitt's team alleges she instead offered supplemental responses limiting her production to 2020 and 2021, later producing profit participation statements and tax returns only for those two years.
Dispute over economic pressure claims
Pitt's filing says that before an Informal Discovery Conference, his side proposed that Jolie stipulate she was not under economic pressure before January 1, 2020, and that Pitt did not exert economic coercion on her from 2017 to 2019. Jolie declined. At the conference, the court proposed narrowing the scope of Jolie's testimony on her earnings and compensation, but Jolie again declined, instead confirming she may argue at trial that Pitt used Miraval as leverage to control her.
The filing argues that Request No. 81 seeks documents showing Jolie's earned income from her separation from Pitt through 2019, the year she allegedly decided she needed to sell Miraval, while Request No. 82 seeks documents showing her earnings from profit-sharing bonuses tied to earlier acting and directing roles during that period. The filing states that documents showing her earned income and profit participation payments during those years would let Pitt's side test the accuracy of her claim that she forwent years of compensation.
Jolie says she was misquoted
In a previous filing, Jolie pushed back on Pitt's characterization of her remarks about seeking financial independence, saying she was misquoted. She said she has already provided financial records despite having no obligation to do so.
A filing from June states that Pitt claims Jolie put her entire financial condition at issue since 2017 because she alleged she was seeking financial independence, but argues Pitt's selective quote leaves out that she specifically alleged seeking financial independence from her ex-husband, not financial independence in the abstract. The filing states that separating from an ex-husband is categorically different from alleging general financial distress, and that Jolie has never alleged she was in financial distress.
The filing further argues that Pitt inaccurately ties his demand for a nondisclosure agreement to Jolie's financial condition, noting that the phrase "financially cornered" originated with Pitt and was never used by Jolie. It states that her ex-husband was attempting to have her sign an NDA covering up his abuse of her and their children as a condition of buying her stake in their winery, and that the issue was not whether Jolie needed money but that she was trying to separate her life and finances from her ex-husband.
Privacy concerns raised
Jolie's side also argues that examining her finances from 2017 to 2019 would pose a "serious invasion" of her privacy rights. The filing states that although Jolie felt strongly she had no obligation to do so, she already produced her tax returns and all profit participation statements showing income received for 2020 and 2021, which should have ended the dispute by giving Pitt the insight he needed into her financial condition.
Background of the split
Pitt and Jolie were regarded as one of Hollywood's leading couples for a decade after meeting on the set of the 2005 film "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." They married in a secret ceremony in the South of France in August 2014. The couple had three biological children together, Shiloh, born in 2006, and twins Vivienne and Knox, born in 2008. They also adopted Zahara and Pax, and Pitt legally adopted Maddox, whom Jolie had adopted before the two got together.
In 2016, the relationship ended after an alleged altercation on a private flight with their six children, after which Jolie filed for divorce. Jolie later claimed Pitt choked one child and struck another in the face during the dispute, leaving her and the children feeling like "hostages" who cowered under a blanket for hours until the plane landed. She also alleged he grabbed her by the head, slammed her against a wall, and shook her violently, injuring her back and elbow.
Pitt's representative initially called Jolie's account "completely untrue" to CNN, then issued an amended statement saying Jolie's story "continues to evolve each time she tells it," that Pitt has accepted responsibility for what he did but not for things he didn't do, and that public authorities she has tried to use against him over the past six years have made their own independent decisions.
Custody battle and aftermath
Since their split, Pitt and Jolie have fought one of the most publicized legal battles in Hollywood history over custody of their six children and over the winery they once co-owned. In May 2021, the two were officially granted joint custody, but a month later the judge's decision was thrown out.
Zahara, Vivienne, Maddox and Shiloh have all stopped using their father's last name; it is unclear where Pax stands. Pitt has since been dating jewelry designer Ines de Ramon for the last few years.
