Russian travel blogger Elena Liseikina has said she would not recommend visiting several cities on Russia's Golden Ring, a popular tourist route northeast of Moscow. She shared her assessment in a post on her blog "Travels with a Camera" on the Zen platform.
Liseikina said she had visited Vladimir several times, walking through the city and seeing its landmarks, but never felt drawn to return. She said that each time she had expected a little more from one of the main cities of the Golden Ring, but instead found an ordinary large regional center that had preserved only a handful of genuinely striking historic sites.
Ivanovo and the industrial reality
The blogger also advised against visiting Ivanovo for travelers hoping for a picture-postcard vision of old Russia. She described it as a working industrial regional center dominated by Soviet-era architecture, constructivist buildings and old factory structures. She warned that anyone expecting narrow lanes, wooden houses and the feel of an ancient Russian town would almost certainly be disappointed.
The Golden Ring is a well-known tourist route linking a group of historic cities northeast of Moscow, prized for their medieval churches, monasteries and traditional architecture. Vladimir and Ivanovo are among the larger cities included on the route, alongside smaller, better-preserved towns such as Suzdal.
Sergiev Posad left her unimpressed
Liseikina named Sergiev Posad as another Golden Ring city she failed to warm to, saying she found nothing of note there beyond the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, one of Russia's most important Orthodox monasteries. She said she had walked further into the city several times, trying to find something else worth staying overnight or returning for, but never did.
The blogger has previously written about Suzdal, another Golden Ring town, describing a day trip there as costing 17,000 rubles, with accommodation making up the largest share of the expense, according to her account.
